Sarah’s Story

Who was Dr Sarah Barlow?

Dr Sarah Barlow, a beloved paediatric doctor, medical researcher, lecturer, and author, was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in November 2018.

She fought incredibly hard through radical surgery and 2 years of chemotherapy, living an amazing 14 months longer than initially predicted, but ultimately lost her battle with metastatic (stage 4) colon cancer, on 10 February 2021, aged 37.

The Foundation’s Story

Why did Sarah set up the foundation?

Because there is no screening process in place for a young person to be diagnosed with bowel cancer before they become symptomatic, and because there is limited effective treatment for a young person with advanced bowel cancer.

Sarah spent much of her life saving kids, and simply put, Sarah’s vision is to prevent other young people from dying of bowel cancer. In an effort to do this, she established The Dr Sarah Barlow Bowel Cancer Foundation with her family, which will provide research grants to scientists who are focused on strategies to improve early detection as well as developing treatments for young people with bowel cancer.
